The olfactory and respiratory pathway
- Check that the chosen essential oil is suitable for diffusion.
- Ideal way to discover and enjoy the benefits of essential oils.
- Fast-acting.
- Recommended for soothing the nervous system and relieving respiratory infections (e.g., sinusitis, rhinopharyngitis).
- For diffusion with an ultrasonic diffuser or nebulizer, for an adult: 15 minutes, 3 times a day.
- For dry inhalation: 2 drops on a tissue or in the hollow of the wrists, inhale deeply 5 times in a row, 3 times a day.
- For wet inhalation: 5 drops of essential oil in total in a bowl of simmering (not boiling) water, inhale for 10 minutes, 2 to 3 times a day.
- Contraindicated for asthmatics, people with respiratory insufficiency, and children under 7 years old.
- Some essential oils (containing phenols or ketones which can be dermocaustic or neurotoxic) are not suitable for this method: Cinnamon, Clove, Savory, Peppermint...
The cutaneous route
- Check that the chosen essential oil can be applied to the skin.
- Fast and lasting action / Local and systemic action as essential oils spread throughout the body.
- Always dilute essential oils in vegetable oil, butter, or gel. They can be applied to the inner wrists ("aromatic infusion"), temples, solar or cardiac plexus, upper chest and back, along the spine, lower abdomen, muscle or joint areas, and the soles of the feet.
- It is advisable to perform an allergy test before using an essential oil (2 drops diluted in a little vegetable oil to be applied in the crook of the elbow and wait 48 hours to ensure there are no irritations, redness, or itching).
- Adapt the dosage to the person and the pathology being treated.
- Always dilute dermocaustic and irritating essential oils (containing phenols, aldehydes, or monoterpenes) very strongly for skin application.
- Never apply essential oils to or around the eyes, inside the nose or ears, and on mucous membranes / If accidental burning occurs, apply vegetable oil directly.
- Do not expose yourself to the sun within 8 hours of applying photosensitizing essential oils.
Oral route
- Ensure that the chosen essential oil is suitable for oral use.
- For curative and short-term treatments only (maximum 5 days).
- Always ingest diluted: in vegetable oil, in honey, on half a sugar cube, on a breadcrumb pellet or on a neutral tablet.
- Recommended dosage for a healthy adult: 2 drops of essential oil morning, noon and evening.
- Consult a doctor for oral use.
- Caution and vigilance in case of ingestion of essential oils containing phenols.
- Contraindicated for people with gastric disorders, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and children under 6 years old.
The Olfactory Pathways
Inhalation
- In an inhaler or a bowl of hot water.
- Effective way to relieve ENT conditions.
- Wait 1 minute before breathing the vapors.
Some ideas for inhalation:
- To clear the nose: 5 drops of essential oils in total (for example, 1 drop of each of these essential oils: Ravintsara, Niaouli, Lemon, Corsican Pine, Eucalyptus globulus).
- For 10 minutes.
- Close your eyes or use an inhaler.
Atmospheric Diffusion
- Adults: 15 minutes/hour, 3 times a day.
- Children over 6 years old: 5 minutes/hour when the child is present, 3 times a day.
- Children under 6 years old: 5 minutes/hour when the child is absent
Some ideas for diffusion:
- To purify: Geranium, Lemon and citrus zest, Lemongrass.
- To repel insects: Lemon Eucalyptus, Geranium, Lemongrass.
- To disinfect (ENT sphere): Winter Synergy, Corsican Pine, Ravintsara, Niaouli, Sweet Marjoram.
- For relaxation and well-being: Relaxation Synergy, Roman Chamomile, Geranium, Fine Lavender, Green Mandarin, Sweet Orange, Ylang-ylang.
The Aromatic Bath
- Essential oils do not mix with water.
- A maximum of 15 to 25 drops of essential oil in the bath for an adult.
- Always dilute essential oils in a carrier before adding them to the bath: powdered or liquid milk, honey, fresh cream, shower gel or shampoo.
- Do not use irritating or dermocaustic essential oils.
Some ideas for the bath:
- For a relaxing bath: 5 drops of Fine Lavender + 5 drops of Roman Chamomile + 5 drops of Green Mandarin in 4 tablespoons of powdered milk. A real skin-soothing and fragrant treatment!
