A bushy shrub with very thorny branches. Its evergreen foliage renews itself when new shoots appear. The flowers are very small, white, sometimes flushed with pink or mauve.
Small, cylindrical fruits with black skin, containing small, crunchy pearls with a tart flavour. There is a wide variety of fruit skin and pulp colours.
